First Botanic Art Class of 2010

This week was our first Botanic Art Class at the Yarraville Community Centre and the Louis Joel Arts Centre in Altona. All classes were well attended including some nervous faces! It's great to see students who considering they have never really done any drawing or painting before in their lives, produce a piece of work that is pretty amazing.

This week we used pencil on paper, to loosen up and gain confidence before we start using watercolours. I have included a number of images of work drawn in the first week.

It is also fantastic to see last years students again, ready to take it a step further. There were some laughs about my idea to show students work in the second half of this year in a exhibition. I am really confident though that over the next semesters some great works of Art will be made.

Follow this blog to view those works and be updated on the world of Botanic Art.

Beginners Course – You will be introduced to pen, ink, pencil & watercolour as a means to exploring technique and developing your own personal style. Drawing and painting from nature.

Course Overview

1: Contemporary & historical botanical illustrators and their techniques. Conventions of botanical illustrations and choice of subject. Basic botany: flower and leaf structures etc.

2: Drawing plants in: pencil - outline, tonal rendering, transferring from tracing paper to water colour paper. Introduction to pen and ink.

3: Introduction to watercolour: mixing colours, applying washes & dry brush. Composition.

After sampling basic techniques, students are encouraged to work on completing a painting of a subject of their choice.

Mentored Class - This class has been developed to flow on from the Beginner Class, and for those that have some previous experience. Emphasis is on building confidence, technique, exploration of materials and an ongoing focus on development of the student’s individual projects. Groups are less structured than the classes and offer one on one tuition.

The objective is to have a finished work of botanical art that is ready to be exhibited or framed.
